Dr. Jonathan Simon, from the Department of Physics at Harvard University, will present, “Quantum Gas Microscope: Exploring the Superfluid to Mott Insulator Transition at the Single Atom Level.” Ultracold gases in optical lattices provide an ideal proving ground for the study of strongly-correlated phases of quantum matter. In this talk I will present a quantum gas microscope that provides a site-resolved view of a degenerate gas in a Hubbard-regime optical lattice. We investigate the superfluid to Mott insulator transition on a single-atom level, studying both dynamical and equilibrium properties. Our novel approach brings the graininess of the quantum world to the forefront, opening many possibilities in quantum simulation and quantum information applications.
