Out in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (oSTEM) is a national student society, dedicated to increasing the participation of people who identify with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual, intersex, or ally (LGBTQ+) communities in disciplines related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). The primary function of oSTEM is to educate and foster leadership among STEM students from LGBTQ+ communities.
oSTEM has chapters from over 50 universities in the US. Some goals of oSTEM are:
(a) To serve and affirm people who identify as LGBTQ+.
(b) To promote the participation from and development of LGBTQ+ communities in STEM disciplines.
(c) To educate and develop students of STEM disciplines, preparing them for graduation.
(d) To support and contribute to the dynamic network sustained by oSTEM Incorporated.
(e) To provide education, outreach, and professional resources to local high schools when appropriate.
(f) To actively recruit and address the needs of diverse LGBTQ+ groups within the University community, inclusive of those who are historically underrepresented with regards to gender, gender identity or expression, and ethnic background.
