Young Adult Literature & IsIam

Monday, May 15, 2017
9:00am – 11:00am

Storrs Campus
Gentry 142/144

Four young adult authors and 15 freshmen from East Hartford High School who studied their novels as part of a Muslim Education research project will present.

The event is free and open to the public.

Why have this event? We exist in a xenophobic cultural moment, one that regularly marginalizes and misrepresents Islam and Muslim culture. This, coupled with changing school demographics and a dearth of children’s and young adult (YA) literature by authors of color, suggests a need for public conversation about Muslim representation in texts for young people.

The project is supported by the UConn Multicultural Children’s and Young Adult Literature Research Center (http://wp.mlrc.uconn.edu/) and funded generously by the Humility and Conviction in Public Life project of the UConn Humanities Institute (http://humilityandconviction.uconn.edu/).
