Lecture, "Caribbean Futures: Surviving the Anthropocene," by Mimi Sheller, Prof. of Sociology and Director, Center for Mobilities Research and Policy, Drexel University. The Caribbean region faces many risks and existential threats in the early 21st century; smaller island states face various issues around changing patterns of tourism, migration, air travel, offshore banking, and narcotics trafficking. How is this entire region being re-spatialized, re-scaled and re-imagined in the face of these threats as well as the impact of wider contemporary processes of neoliberalization, planetary urbanization, and global infrastructural restructuring? And how are Caribbean people and states reimagining the region and their place in the world in the face of these economic and political forces, and the irresistible ecological and social changes that they unleash?
