Teaching Social Work in a Segregated University

Thursday, March 22, 2018
2:00pm – 3:00pm

Downtown Hartford
School of Social Work Community Room, Ground Level

Higher education in the United States continues to discriminate on the basis of immigration status. Federal financial aid is never available to students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or to undocumented students, and Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama actually bar these students from attending certain universities. The flagship universities in Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama are among those that segregate by immigration status, and all three schools boast prominent schools of social work. This talk will explore the ethically complex position from which faculty in these schools operate, and discuss strategies that faculty can use to fulfill their ethical mandate to oppose discrimination.
