Fast and Furious: Understanding the Changing-Look Quasars

Quasars, or active galactic nuclei (AGN), emit copious broadband radiation from the environment surrounding their central supermassive black holes. In the "changing look quasars", rare and spectacular drops or jumps in quasar luminosity occur on timescales far shorter than expected, as discovered from repeat photometric and spectroscopic observations in this dawning era of time domain astronomy. I present results from spectroscopic follow-up of highly variable quasars in a quest to understand these objects.
