The Emergence of Galactic Structure

I will discuss the emergence of galactic structure: how the Universe evolved from its uniform state shortly after the Big Bang to the rich diversity of galaxies today. Despite having determined the primary structural building blocks that comprise local galaxies -- bulges and disks -- we still do not know how they formed. The improved spatial resolution with which we can now observe early galaxies has given us a clearer window into how they grew. Combining millimeter interferometry, near infrared integral field spectroscopy, and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, I will discuss new insights into the formation of disks and bulges at the peak epoch of star formation.
