Next-generation nuclear physics with polarized light ions at EIC

The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will enable next-generation experiments in high-energy electron scattering on protons and nuclei, including polarized light ions (deuteron, 3He, ...). Such measurements address important physics topics such as the spin structure of the neutron, effects of nuclear interactions on the quark/gluon densities, and coherent phenomena in QCD at small x. Detection of the nuclear breakup following the high-energy process ("spectator nucleon tagging") reveals the nuclear configurations present during the high-energy process and permits a controlled theoretical treatment of nuclear effects. We present an overview of the physics objectives, theoretical methods, experimental techniques, and on-going R&D efforts related to measurements with polarized deuteron beams and spectator nucleon tagging at the EIC. We present new results in the theory of nuclear final-state interactions, diffraction and nuclear shadowing, and polarization phenomena in deep-inelastic scattering with spectator tagging. We give a perspective on future physics studies and detailed process simulations for the EIC.
