“Quantum Mixtures of Alkali and Alkaline-Earth-Like Atoms”

Ultracold paramagnetic polar molecules have been proposed for a range of applications in quantum simulation, quantum information science, and precision tests of fundamental physics. Quantum degenerate mixtures of alkali and alkaline-earth-like atomic gases form a starting point for the realization of such systems. We have developed ultracold and quantum degenerate mixtures of the candidate system lithium (Li) and ytterbium (Yb) atoms. I will present our experimental work investigating few-body collisional mixture properties with ground state Li and Yb in either ground or an excited metastable state. The latter combination is predicted to support broad magnetic Feshbach resonances, relevant for interaction tuning and molecule formation. I will report on our recent production of this heteronuclear mixture of ground and excited state atoms and our observations of field dependent interactions therein.
