"Stranger Visions"

Friday, September 12, 2014
2:00pm – 4:00pm

Storrs Campus
UConn Co-Op

On Friday September 19th at 2pm in the Storrs Center UCONN Coop, this years Sackler Artist in Residence, Heather Dewey-Hagborg will discuss her work and talk about her “Stranger Visions” project in which she creates portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material collected in public places. Working with the traces that strangers unwittingly leave behind, Dewey-Hagborg calls attention to the impulse toward genetic determinism and the potential for a culture of biological surveillance. As genetic testing becomes rapidly more accessible and affordable, we as citizens have the opportunity to join the discussion around DNA sequencing and the inescapability, value, and pitfalls of having your genetic profile accessible with the touch of a screen
