Storrs Campus
Rainbow Center; Student Union 403

The Rainbow Center's Out to Lunch Lecture Series continues the semester with a presentation by Ricky Simone, entitled, "If you want an Ally, be an Ally: The Importance of Coalition building in the progression of the LGBT civil rights movement."

An ally is any person who supports, empowers, or stands up for another person or a group of people. All oppressed communities benefit from ally support. The LGBT community is known for being very successful at creating ally programs in order to create support for the LGBT community. But in this workshop we will explore how the LGBT community can better support other oppressed communities. In this workshop, attendees will be presented with information regarding the importance of reaching across oppressed communities to establish a social justice network.

Ricky Simone: The Hip Hop Activist is a Black lesbian human rights activist. She performs hip hop music with thought provoking content intended to inspire love and the liberation of oppressed communities. In January 2015, she received the President's Fulfilling the Dream Award at the University of Georgia. This award recognizes individuals who have worked to make Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality and justice a reality: She was nominated for two 2015 Athens Hip Hop awards. She has performed or presented at Creating Change: The National Conference on LGBT Equality, Atlanta Pride, Athens Pride, North Carolina Shades of Pride Stonewall Soiree, Institute for Women's Studies at the University of Georgia, Social Justice Day at the University of North Georgia, Ask Rayceen Show (DC), SlutWalk DC, Take Back the Night, etc.
