Ricky Simone: Hip Hop Activism

Thursday, April 9, 2015
5:00pm – 7:00pm

Storrs Campus
Rainbow Center, Student Union 403

Ricky Simone continues her visit at UConn with the presentation, "Hip Hop Activism: The B-side of Misogyny, Hyper-consumerism, & Homophobia."

Hip Hop music grew from an underground form of self-expression for marginalized youth to a billion-dollar industry that spans music, fashion, art, and politics. As hip hop gained popularity and became more lucrative, it was re-branded. The result is a genre saturated with misogyny, hyper-consumerism, and homophobia.

Hip Hop Activism is a form of resistance to the pervasive negativity in commercialized hip hop music. It provides a counter-narrative to today's industry standards in an attempt to bring the music back to the earlier themes of social justice and empowerment.

After the presenation, Ricky Simone will perform some of her original music.
