Lecture: Examining The Performance of Sexuality/Gender

Thursday, November 5, 2015
12:00pm – 1:30pm

Storrs Campus
Rainbow Center; Student Union 403

The Out to Lunch Lecture Series continues the semester with a presentation by Denise Frohman, entitled, "Resistance, Otherness, and Examining The Performance of Sexuality/Gender."

Cheryl Clarke offers the revelatory idea that to be a lesbian is “an act of resistance” against a patriarchal, heterosexist society. As we live out and learn how our desires as queer women resist these oppressive systems, we are not immune from their effects nor automatically stripped from our own conditioning. We will explore this notion and more broadly, navigate the uncomfortable terrain of how we can still be transmitters of patriarchal and heteronormative ideologies, even as we love outside of those limited prescriptions. Students will also experience art as activism and the subversive nature of language through a spoken word performance that represents the intersectional realities of the presenter as a queer woman of color.

Denise Frohman is an award-winning poet and educator, whose work explores the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and the “in-betweeness” that exists in us all. She is the 2013 Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion, 2014 CantoMundo Fellow, 2013 Hispanic Choice Award, and 2012 Leeway Transformation Award recipient. Her work has appeared in the Huffington Post and the forthcoming book, Jotas: An Anthology of Queer Latina Voices. Her poem "Dear Straight People" went viral with over 1.5 million YouTube views. She has performed and taught poetry at hundreds of colleges, schools, community spaces and detention centers across the country, and was the former Program Director at the Philly Youth Poetry Movement. She is currently on tour as part of the spoken word duo, Sister Outsider Poetry.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunches.
