Contested Consciousness: Foreign Aid and Palestinian Education in the West Bank

Political Science Brown Bag Talk Date: Tuesday October 11, 2016 Time: 12:15-1:30pm Location: Oak 438 Melanie Meinzer is a Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science and Draper Dissertation Fellow at UConn's Humanities Institute. She will be presenting findings from her ten months of field research on foreign aid and education in the West Bank. Her dissertation examines how Palestinian civic organizations re-insert Palestinian history and identity into education, shaping Palestinians’ political consciousness and activism. Her research investigates how civic groups exercise agency in restrictive political settings, within broader debates on how international intervention can both constrain and empower political action in the global south. Melanie's field research was supported by a 2015-16 Boren Fellowship, and grants from UConn's Human Rights Institute and Political Science Department.
