Ferroelastic Domains and Their Effect on Transport in STO Based Devices

We use scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to map current flow in LAO/STO and other STO based devices. We show that the microscopic picture, i.e. small local modulation in the current density, accounts for a substantial part of the transport anisotropy observed macroscopically. We also report a surprising strain induced response of transport, and relate it to modulation of conductivity over the STO domain walls. Understanding and controlling the physics of atomic scale features like STO domains has potential for future nano-electronics.
