Personal Statement Workshop

Friday, February 3, 2017
2:00pm – 3:00pm

Storrs Campus
HBL, Level 1, EC-1

Applications to graduate schools, fellowships, grants, jobs, and other competitive programs often require each applicant to submit a short essay about their history, qualifications, goals, and purpose for applying. These essays are sometimes written in response to very specific questions or sometimes in response to a generic prompt. In both cases, this initial document plays an important role in your application process. This workshop will familiarize you with the basic elements of each essay, and it will offer a constructive environment for you to start drafting your essay. Because these essays usually need multiple revisions, we encourage you to attend both the introductory and the follow-up session: Week 1: Presentation + Free Write(2/3/17) (1hr) Introducing students to basic conventions of personal statements and cover letters. We will compare and contrast the introductions to several successful essays. This is followed by a 30 minute free-write period, where students are encouraged to collaborate, write drafts, and ask questions. Week 2: Peer-Review(2/10/2017) (1hr) After the presentation and initial drafting from the week before, students are encouraged to bring their drafts and discuss them with the workshop leader and their peers. Students at any point in the writing process are invited to attend Undergraduates, graduate students, and non-native English speakers are all welcome.
