Evening in the Garden

Wednesday, August 23, 2017
5:30pm – 7:30pm

Storrs Campus
Northwest Park, Windsor

On Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the public is invited to visit and sample the mid-summer harvest from the Demonstration Organic Garden at Northwest Park, 145 Lang Road.

UConn Extension Master Gardeners and interns from area counties have been hard at work this summer on the first of a multi-year plan to rejuvenate this gem, located across from the community gardens. Recently adopted as a signature project of the Hartford and Tolland county Master Gardeners, the purpose is to introduce would-be gardeners to the variety of crops that can be easily grown organically in the area, as well as to provide specific learning opportunities for all ages.

In the next few years more educational material will be produced to create a small garden library, as well as signage to enhance a self-guided stroll among the dozen raised beds. The Windsor Public Library contributed eye-catching plant labels created by 3-D printing.

Monthly topical presentations and discussions will also be held, as well as plant clinics for those pesky insect and disease problems that can pop up in the best-tended gardens. There will be a plan to incorporate permaculture into the border around the beds as well.

Volunteers are welcome for fall projects. Contact Nancy for more information at 860-212-9596.
