Professor Sharmishtha Roy Chowdhury from UConn’s History Department will discuss her current research project on late colonial India:

"Those Long Months in the Hideous Flat": The First World War, the Mesopotamian Campaign, and Reimagining British India, 1914-1919"

During the chaotic Mesopotamian campaign, 1914-1917, India became linked in complex ways to the modern Middle East as a site of imperial activity. I argue that British reimaginings of India were shaped on the shattered landscape of Mesopotamia c. 1914-1917, the terrain of combat, siege, and captivity. Descriptions of the Indian landscape, of Mesopotamia’s symbolic and territorial significance, its relationship to India, and the remembered vistas of England – all these illuminate the breakdown of imperial certainty in the age of total war.
