You Should…Confront Racism in the Digital Realm: A Teach-In

Wednesday, November 8, 2017
12:00pm – 2:00pm

Storrs Campus
UCHI Seminar Room, Babbidge Library 4th Floor

The “You Should…” pulls from a new program UCHI started to make the humanities more personal and urgent (http://humanities.uconn.edu/humanities-lived-you-should/). For this proposed teach-in, the 5 speakers will briefly give some opening comments concerning topics such as social media activism/racism (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) dealing with online racism, online activism and connections to civil responsibility, courage, and action--- basically the potential and pitfalls, in other words, of our life online. We will then open the dialogue to the audience asking: how does one recognize and take action against racism online? Are there tools or methods that have been effective? Can we use social media for cultural change?

Panelist: Professors Anke Finger, Bhakti Shringarpure, Kelly Dennis, Anne Mae Duane, and PhD Student Matthew Guariglia

Organized by Alexis Boylan, UCHI Associate Director and Anke Finger, UCHI Assistant Director
