White Mythmaking and the Middle Ages

Wednesday, November 8, 2017
1:00pm – 1:30pm

Storrs Campus
Stern Lounge, Austin Building

This presentation outlines the alt right’s dependence on a racist and inaccurate vision of the European Middle Ages, and the relation of this vision to more subtle but equally inaccurate ideas of the medieval shared in popular culture. The presentation aims to illustrate how the alt right’s overt and dramatic racial violence is supported by implicit racism in common assumptions about the medieval. Finally, the presentation will provide evidence to counter both kinds of racist history, and suggest methods for audience members to engage with popular culture as forms of anti-racist activism.
