Solidarity with Sujitno: Asian Pacific Islander Community & Deportation

Sanctuary in Meriden, CT

Join us for an opportunity to talk and discuss deportation, the Asian Pacific Islander Community and sanctuary through video chat with SUJITNO SAJUTI.

Sujitno is a 68-year-old West Hartford man who had been ordered to return to his native Indonesia, but instead sought sanctuary in a Meriden church last October, the third undocumented immigrant to do so in Connecticut this year.

Sujitno, who came to the U.S. in 1981 as a Fulbright scholar, overstayed his visa. He earned a master's degree at Columbia University and returned to Indonesia before re-entering the U.S. in 1989 to pursue a Ph.D at UConn. His visa expired during his tenure at UConn and, rather than returning to Indonesia and face a world he no longer knows, he stayed in West Hartford. For the past several decades Sujitno has taught Indonesian and Koranic studies at local mosques and community centers.

This event is free and open to the public.

Co-sponsors are AsACC, Asian & Asian American Studies Institute, Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, Connecticut Immigration Rights Alliance, Campus Anti-Fascist Network and the Neighbor Fund.
