Rachel is revered by all three Abrahamic faiths as the mother who “weeps for her children” - a powerful metaphor for all those who grieve over the suffering of children. Today, Rachel’s grief is shared by Palestinian and Israeli mothers and fathers who yearn for a better future for their children, and by so many more who work to end their suffering. According to Defense for Children International – Palestine, “Israel has the dubious distinction of being the only country in the world that systematically prosecutes an estimated 500 to 700 children each year in military (not civilian) courts lacking fundamental fair trial rights. Children as young as 12 are taken from their beds at night, bound, blindfolded and taken to detention centers where they are denied access to their parents or to legal aid.” The time has come for all of us to respond to Rachel “weeping for her children.” Tree of Life will amplify the courageous work being done by human rights organizations as they respond to this crisis.
