“Emerging as an Equity-Minded Academic Medical Institution Through Inclusion Excellence: Implications for Medical Education”

Provided by University of Connecticut School of Medicine Office of Community and Continuing Medical Education and Academic Educational Affairs

This session will examine the institutional landscape (climate) of the learning and workplace environments at our academic medical institutions (AMI). Academic Medical Institutions still find significant challenges and exclusionary practices that our learners, faculty and staff face that impact their academic and work performance, their advancement, and their well-being. Academic Medical Institutions have an obligation to identify, address and deconstruct those policies, practices, procedures, customs and traditions that contribute to these challenges. These challenges include mistreatment, sexual/gender harassment, biases and racial discrimination, microaggressions, and stereotype threat.

Target Audience: Faculty, staff, and trainees at the UConn Health Center

Learning Objectives: Participants will (be able to): 1. Illustrate the sensitivity of the institutional landscape experienced at all levels and reflect on how they might be contributing to some of the exclusionary practices embedded within the institution’s policies, processes, infrastructure, traditions, norms and values. 2. Describe conscious inclusion practices to achieve inclusion excellence in the learning and working environments 3. Describe the equity-mindedness practices to begin the intentional deconstruction of structures, policies and processes that have historically excluded specific population groups from achieving the full potential.
