Storrs Campus
Wilbur Cross

You are cordially invited to attend this year's Elizabeth Shanley Gerson Irish reception and reading with Northern Irish poet and novelist NICK LAIRD on Tuesday, April 9, 2019.

At 6:30 p.m., you may meet Mr. Laird at a reception in the Wilbur Cross North Reading Room (233 Glenbrook Rd, Storrs, CT 06269).

A little after 7:00 pm, Mr. Laird will read from his work, preceded by the announcement of this year's Timothy F. Moriarty Graduate Award in Irish Literature.

Mr. Laird will be introduced by Galway poet Geraldine Mills, a former Gerson Irish Reader.

Nick Laird was born in Northern Ireland and has published four poetry collections with Faber and Faber. His fourth, Feel Free, was shortlisted for the 2018 T.S. Eliot Prize. He has published three novels with Fourth Estate, most recently Modern Gods (2017). His first, Utterly Monkey, won the 2005 Berry Trask Prize for best first novel. He is a recipient of the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the Ireland Chair of Poetry Award, a Somerset Maugham Award, and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. A graduate of Cambridge University and a former lawyer, he currently teaches creative writing at NYU. This program is sponsored by the Gerson family in memory of the late Professor Emeritus Louis Gerson’s late wife, Elizabeth Shanley Gerson, whose love of Irish literature inspired this annual event. It is supported by the English Department, Irish Studies, and the Creative Writing Program.
