The teacher as student: Using the "Beginner's Mind" approach to refresh your teaching practice

Thursday, August 1, 2019
2:00pm – 3:15pm

Storrs Campus
ROWE 319

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind there are few.” – Shunryu Suzuki. Learning is easier when new concepts and data are connected to already acquired networks of knowledge and experience. As subject experts, it is common to lose touch with what it’s like to be a beginner, or novice, at the thing we are teaching. As the new semester begins to ramp up, it can be helpful to do some exercises to help you take the perspective of students, particularly if you are teaching first year students, but also if you encounter transfer students or anyone who is new to higher education or new to a particular discipline, field, or major.

The workshop will consist of a variety of problem-solving exercises, done as individuals and in groups, followed by individual reflection in response to writing prompts related to those exercises and to uncovering your personal connection to the subject you will be teaching.
