Tuesday, October 22, 2019
3:30pm – 4:30pm

Storrs Campus
BPB 130

The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology welcomes Oh Sung Kwon, Ph.D., University of Connecticut Assistant Professor of Kinesiology. 3:15 refreshments followed by the seminar at 3:30, BPB 130. Hosted by Dr. Ken Campellone.

“Mitochondria in skeletal muscle and vascular health, aging, and diseases”

Mitochondria function and homeostasis are critical for maintaining a physiological healthy condition in our body. Specifically, mitochondrial-derived reactive oxygen species may be the key source of various age-related diseases. He will discuss the role of mitochondria and mitochondrial-derived reactive oxygen species on age-related diseases and novel mitochondria-targeted therapeutic strategies which may hold promise for preventing, possibly decreasing the risk of many chronic age-related clinical disorders.

Dr. Kwon earned a B.A. in physical education and M.S. in exercise physiology from Seoul National University in South Korea, an M.S. in exercise physiology from East Carolina University, and Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of Florida. He completed his post-doc in physical therapy, diabetes, and metabolism at the University of Utah, where he then served as a research associate in Utah Vascular Research Laboratory.
