Inequalities: A Mathematical Toolbox

Wednesday, February 2, 2022
5:30pm – 6:30pm

Storrs Campus
Monteith 214

Inequalities are very useful to provide a lower or upper bound for a quantity when finding an exact formula is difficult. Mathematicians use inequalities in a range of fields such as analysis, geometry, combinatorics, and probability. For students, there are a select few important inequalities which can make a very complicated problem into an easy one!

This week, we will be discussing the AM-HM-GM inequality, the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, Jensen’s Inequality, and many more helpful mathematical tools. We also will work through some interesting problems to show you the power of inequalities, even tackling a Putnam Problem from this year’s exam!

All are welcome. Problems of varying levels, as well as refreshments, will be provided.
